Packing light

We’ve all been there: The night before a trip, staring down at an overstuffed suitcase, still not sure if you packed everything you need for your long-anticipated getaway.

I used to be an chronic over packer. I think it came down to not wanting to commit to specific clothing so I would end up packing half of my wardrobe, just to keep my options open. At the end of the trip, I’d realize I’d only worn a tiny fraction of it and would be frustrated with myself for bringing so much. Not to mention my husband would always make fun of me as I attempted to lug my bulging and overweight suitcase through the airport.

As I’ve embarked on this journey of letting go of the unnecessary in favor of fewer, better things, I’ve found that packing is now easier, less stressful and takes significantly less time.

Here are some tips I’ve learned along the way that help make the process less painful. So here you go!

1. Put on a playlist. Music always makes tedious tasks better.

2. Make lists. I use this packing list. It keeps the panic at bay when you’re at the airport wondering if you packed your contacts and medication.
3. Lay out everything on the bed. You don’t need as much as you think and can edit a lot out here. You don’t need as many pants or bottoms as you do tops and dresses which are more lightweight. A little black dress that doesn’t wrinkle is always a good idea.
4.  Shoes: You’ll need a pair of sneakers/workout shoes which I like to wear on the plane (or in the car) because they tend to be bulky and are comfortable to travel in. You probably only need one pair of dressy shoes/sandals and one pair of casual sandals or shoes. Shoes are heavy and take up major real estate in your suitcase.
5. Jewelry: Stella & Dot makes this great travel jewelry case. I try to go light on the jewelry and pack only my favorites — usually one statement necklace, one bracelet and a few pairs of earrings.
6. Cosmetics. Time for the A-team here. Pack only the basics of your makeup and skincare. I use this and also love this travel kit.
7. Roll your clothing. Put shoes and heavy things in the bottom then roll everything else. It saves room and prevents wrinkles.
8. Use capsule wardrobe principles. Try to bring neutral items that go with everything so you can mix + match and make multiple different outfits out of only a few items. Again, bring only the clothes + shoes that you love, that fit well and make you feel fabulous.
9. Scarves. They’re lightweight, versatile and can change the look of an outfit instantly. I could live in white jeans, a t-shirt, sandals and a scarf in warmer weather.
10. Zip lock gallon freezer bags. I use these for everything and always pack a bunch of empty ones for packing on the way home.

So there you have it! Soon you’ll be relaxing on a beach or exploring a new city and will have forgotten all about the stress of what to pack. Happy packing!
